Culture Shock

“It would be like a culture shock. It’s not something we’re used to”

– Eric Barone

People from all over the world come to Vancouver with their own habits, customs and traditions. Before coming to Vancouver, everyone spends a plenty of time in front of the computer searching for the basic information about this city. However, nobody has an idea to find out some information about Canadian culture in order to avoid meeting unexpected developments such as culture shock. How does culture have an impact not only on our own customs but also on our decisions? It is to find out a definite answer to this question; however, by analyzing a certain situation as an example, we can figure it out. At the beginning of the last semester one of my close friends mentioned that the way I was dressing segregated in the society because its more fancy, girly, like Russian style. She also added that in a few months I would merge in the society. This talk pushed me for a precise analysis of why students have been falling for an influence of Canadian culture so easily. I have no right to judge anyone and, of course, comment someone’s decisions, but I’d say its incorrect or unfair to bring changes into your own habits to a habit, which have been created a long time ago by a different cultural group? Does not it refer to disrespect to your own country, culture, and family? According to my opinion, we are here, in Vancouver, for bringing changes and innovation to a Canadian society but not for yielding the common Canadian flow and experience afterwards, the cultural shock.
